Biography
Associate Professor Erika James teaches "Leading Organizations" at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. She conducts research in the areas of crisis leadership and race and gender in organizations and has published in several leading academic journals including Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology and Academy of Management Journal. Her research on crisis leadership is also evident in her book, Leading Under Pressure: From Surviving to Thriving Before, During, and After a Crisis.
In her work with executives, James conducts seminars or consults on how to make decisions under pressure and how to build trust in the workplace. She has worked with several Fortune 500 companies such as Intel, Freddie Mac, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Merrill Lynch and Farmers Insurance.
She joined the Darden faculty in 2001. In addition to teaching, she pioneered the position of associate dean of diversity at Darden, in order to create a more diverse and inclusive environment for faculty and students. Prior to her Darden appointment, James served on the faculty at the Freeman School of Business at Tulane University and the Goizuetta Business School at Emory University.
